Subliminal Messages in Romance Novels

2/13/2018

I just finished reading Backstreet Hero by Justine Davis. Normally, I view romance novels as the candy of literature and rarely do I turn a critical eye on them. However, lately as #MeToo gains popularity and more women come forward, I began to think that these novels more critically. Because romance novels are so often read quickly and not examined they are shaping the way their readers think.

In Backstreet Hero the message is not particularly bad. In fact, on the surface, and unlike many romance novels, it actively challenges the stereotype of the alpha male and the submissive female. Yet, if we look below the surface it becomes more problematic. The plot is that Tony Alvera, Redstone Security, takes the assignment to investigate a possible assassination attempt on Lilith Mercer. So, while Tony is working to find out who might be trying to kill Lilith he’s acting as her bodyguard. That’s a position of trust and Lilith can’t give consent to a relationship when Tony has that kind of power over her. The advantage to fiction over real life is that we know what they're both thinking. The problem with this type of fiction is that it is so prevalent and makes us think that such actions are okay in real life.

After all, everyone knows that the bodyguard sleeps with the girl. She must want it, we read it in novels, and see it in movies such as Bodyguard. Though it is fair to point out that Bodyguard is an old example it set the stereotype in many people’s minds. While fiction is not the real world, it is our reflection and interpretation of that world. I am not suggesting that we stop reading romance novels that present these stereotypes, but I think we need to be aware that they are stereotypes and not real people. One of the main problems that things like affirmative consent and #MeToo face is disbelief and the idea presented in novels that consent can be given in situations where one person has power over another makes this problem worse. Too many people take the lessons learned from novels and movies and apply them directly to their own lives.

Zoe Whittal in her recent article “CanLit Has a Sexual Harassment Problem” mentions that often when discussing her recent book The Best Kind of People she gets trapped in these discussions about how teenage girls lie and male teachers are often targets of false accusations. Besides being a very strange way to read her novel, it highlights the level of denial found in the general population. Especially when a male is in a position of authority over a female student, that woman cannot give consent because the man has power over her. This should not be a difficult concept.  The message is out there and it is becoming more main stream the trick is to listen and the read between the lines the next time you pick up your favorite Tessa Dare or Elizabeth Hoyt.

Synonyms

6/29/2017

A synonym is defined as two words that mean the same thing. An example of this term is the words autumn and fall which are words that refer to the season between summer and winter. Yet, even in this simple example we find a problem. Fall is a simple one syllable word that suggests leaves falling off trees and fruit falling to the ground. It foreshadows the dormancy of life that is seen in winter.
On the other hand, the word autumn is euphonious. It evokes the beauty of the season. The colors of the leaves that are only seen in autumn. The word evokes the sense of urgency that can be lost in summer’s warmer days. Autumn is a time of plenty. The harvest comes in and all of nature’s bounty is seen. Life not death is showcased.
So, with that in mind, do synonyms really exist? I remember my professor in History of the English Language stating definitively that they did not. Each word has its own unique meaning. If you are using a thesaurus to spice up your writing all you are really doing is obscuring your meaning. It is certainly important to use language correctly. Finding the right can mean the difference between persecuting wrongdoers or prosecuting them.
So, all of this analysis suggests that synonyms are a social construct. Of course, in many ways language itself can be read as a social construct. Words have meaning because society agrees that they do. Social constructs at this basic level are necessary for society to function. If the geographic group where you live suddenly decided on a different meaning for basic sounds you would have no way to communicate.
Yet, synonyms are a few steps above this level. The existence of synonyms suggests that we do not believe we can accurately use language and instead must repeat ourselves. It may be better to view the construct of synonyms as a teaching tool. To children and those learning English we say this word is like this word instead of offering a complex definition. The trick is to move past this simplistic view as we learn more words.

Things I’ve learned Looking for Work in the “Real World”

6/16/2017

  1. While there are different types of intelligences some people are smarter than others.
  2. "Everybody knows" both less and more than you think they do.
  3. You don’t have to be a programmer to have excellent computer skills.
  4. Almost no one reads cover letters.
  5. People coming out of academia consistently undervalue their skills.
  6. People who are hiring really do want soft skills like team work. The trick is to re-define the type of job that you are looking for.
  7. There are still companies looking for employees who will stay. You can find a career not just a job.
  8. Good jobs inside academia are much harder to find than corporate jobs.
  9. Even with the right skills much of job hunting is about who you know. Find a way to make contact with people, at least by phone if not in person.
  10. People will often think you are overqualified. If this happens consistently in your job hunt you are probably looking for work in the wrong place.
  11. A surprising number of people put only the minimum amount of effort into their job. Coming from academia this lack of drive can be a shock. However, employers do still reward effort. It is important to show ways that you have gone above and beyond.

So you majored in the Humanities...

5/19/2017

So now you have a degree in the Humanities. Where do you go from here? There are the traditional answers. You can go to teacher’s college. If you enjoy working with children and see yourself shaping the next generation this is a great idea. But if you’re looking for a job in Canada within five years of graduating teaching is probably not the way to go unless you enjoy the far north. Next up, you can get a Master’s. One or two years focused on the subject of your choice. You’ll get to try out the teaching thing and see what its like. You could also try a certificate course. These courses are usually offered by colleges to those who already have a B.A. They offer things like Museum Studies and Publishing. Training at college is more job oriented and a certificate course focuses on training you for a specific job. If you are interested in any of the jobs the courses relate to these certificates are definitely worth checking out as the programs often hook you up with people in the industry and sponsor internships that can lead to full time employment. You could also go to law school…
But what if you just want to enter the workforce? You just spent four years of your life getting this degree.  So you can be a writer. Writing the next great novel is a great long term goal but really not a job so being a writer really means writing advertising. Hey, it’s a job and people will pay you to do it. You can work as a tutor or editor. The problem with that is that the market is flooded with tutors and editors working in the humanities and the people who really need editors often can’t afford to hire them. (re: anyone self-publishing on Amazon) You could open a book store. This is a dream job but unless you live somewhere with a high traffic area that doesn’t already have a good bookstore it is also a great way to lose your shirt. There are also the places that are always hiring like Walmart and Tim Hortons. They’ll take you in an instant and if you want to go this route you can probably make manager.
So what is really needed is a paradigm shift. If you’ve read any of the employers’ websites what they say they are looking for are soft skills. These are the skills that you just learned in that four-year degree that you are starting to feel isn’t worth the paper it’s written on. Soft Skills include (according to the University of Eastern Kentucky) :
1.          Communication – oral, speaking capability, written, presenting, listening.
2.          Courtesy – manners, etiquette, business etiquette, gracious, says please and thank you, respectful.
3.          Flexibility – adaptability, willing to change, lifelong learner, accepts new things, adjusts, teachable.
4.          Integrity – honest, ethical, high morals, has personal values, does what’s right.
5.          Interpersonal skills – nice, personable, sense of humor, friendly, nurturing, empathetic, has self-control, patient, sociability, warmth, social skills.
6.          Positive attitude – optimistic, enthusiastic, encouraging, happy, confident.
7.          Professionalism – businesslike, well-dressed, appearance, poised.
8.          Responsibility – accountable, reliable, gets the job done, resourceful, self-disciplined, wants to do well, conscientious, common sense.
9.          Teamwork – cooperative, gets along with others, agreeable, supportive, helpful, collaborative.
10.       Work ethic – hard working, willing to work, loyal, initiative, self-motivated, on time, good attendance.
If you take a look at these, you will note that your university experience gave you all of these skills. You now need to re-write your resume and cover letter to highlight these skills with concrete examples of when you used them. This will get you the job you want. The next trick is to decide what that job is. Some ideas include: Administrative Assistant, Front Desk Clerk, Bank Teller, Manager, Sales Man, and Data Analyst.

Twisted Fairytales--Cinderella

5/11/2017

Picture
Twisted fairy tales are becoming almost a genre of their own instead of a sub-genre of fantasy. A twisted fairy tale is one that has been modified in some way from the original. One of my favourite authors, Mercedes Lackey, currently has two series out that are based around fairy tales: Elemental Masters and Five Hundred Kingdoms. The Elemental Masters series explores the lives of mages who control the elements and is set in Edwardian England, though more recent editions to the series have moved into Germany. The series draws from such classic tales as Cinderella (Phoenix and Ashes, 2004). In Phoenix and Ashes Elanor Robinson with the ability to be a fire master is bond through black magic to the hearth of her family home by her stepmother Alison. The townspeople forget her existence and she despairs of ever escaping. Then she meets an air master at the edge of his estate. Reginald Fenyx and his mother teach her about her power and she is eventually able to free herself from her stepmother’s evil spell using her new found knowledge.
Five Hundred Kingdoms is a much less subtle series than Elemental Masters. In that realm, people are ruled by The Tradition. The Tradition is a force that creates and enforces stories. So it forces peoples’ lives down “traditional” paths such as Cinderella, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. This series begins with a woman who should have been Cinderella, but her prince was too young. Ella is, instead, rescued from her evil stepmother by her kingdom’s fairy godmother and taught how to use The Tradition to become a godmother herself (The Fairy Godmother, 2004). As a fairy godmother Ella looks after her kingdom and meets Alexander when he fails a quest. Later Alexander and Ella must rescue his brother when a Koschei invades the kingdom. Alex becomes a champion and Ella may have found her prince.
The common theme in both these books is that the female protagonist discovers her own power and saves the day herself. While they are both romance novels the men in the novels are the women’s partners. The women actually end up saving the men. Elanor must rescue Reggie from Alison’s plot and Ella must reform Alexander. This is often the case with twisted fairy tales. They are used to forward ideals. In this case Lackey has used them as a vehicle for feminism. Their popularity makes them the perfect medium for messages of female empowerment. At the same time the author is able to show what was wrong with the original story.

Imogen and Ophelia Commiserate

Picture
Dearest Ophelia,
I am at a loss. My darling Posthumus has betrayed me in the worst possible way. Were Pisanio not loyal, I would even now be dead at my husband’s hand. I am shaking as I write this. I can barely conceive of such actions. Does love not trust? Surely love such as mine and Posthumus’ is timeless and unchanging. Yet, he finds fault with my devotion and orders my death. Pisanio has arranged for me to flee into the countryside. As I find myself surrounded by enemies, I intend to take his advice.
However, I hope to hear from you and that you will have better news for me. Perhaps I judge Posthumus too harshly and there is some reason for his behaviour. I draw hope from your last letter in which you mentioned your darling Hamlet was returning from university. Since his uncle and your father both support the match I am sure that you will not encounter the problems I have. Perhaps your next letter will contain a wedding announcement?
If you and Hamlet are now betrothed perhaps you can add his opinion of Posthumus’ behaviour to your own. I love Posthumus dearly and even as I flee him I pray we can be reconciled.

Your Dearest Friend,
Imogen

Darling Imogen,
As I read your letter I can only think that men are stricken with a peculiar type of madness. Hamlet certainly appears to have gone mad. If we ever had an understanding there is one no longer. He staged this horrid play, during which he was most inappropriate with me. His caresses might have given me hope, but it is clear that there will be no announcement. The man actually told me to go become a nun! As though his behaviour was my fault.
All he talks about is his father. I don’t know why. No one liked the old king. He was forever pinching the maids and he once cornered me. I don’t know what would have happened if Laertes hadn’t come along. Claudius is ever so much nicer. Does it really matter if the old goat actually died of a heart attack or not? Everyone is happy now. At least they could be, if Hamlet would stop acting like a lunatic. I hold little hope in that regard, however, as men seem to prize honour above all else.
That seems to be the problem with your Posthumus as well. Since you are in love with each other, trusting each other should be a given. Yet, clearly Posthumus’ honour has somehow been offended. You mentioned his friend Iachimo’s visit in your earlier letter. Perhaps the visit was some sort of inane male test. My advice is that instead of running into the country you search out Iachimo and discover the truth. Surely, whatever game he was playing, once the man realizes he has endangered your life he will admit to the truth.
If this plan is not to your liking you can always come visit here. I would be glad of some help with Hamlet. At this point I am sore tried and may run off to the nunnery!

Yours in frustration,
Ophelia

Dearest Ophelia,
I cannot countenance your news about Hamlet. Perhaps you are right and all men are simply mad. I have found safe harbour for now in the countryside and can make no permanent plans. I will, however, take your words about Iachimo under advisement. It was after his visit that the bracelet given to me by Posthumus went missing. Perhaps there is a connection? Yet, surely Posthumus would not be swayed by the words of a thief.
Then again it seems your Hamlet is willing to throw away everything for a few silly rumours. And as you said who cares if they are true. Claudius is twice the man the old king was. Hamlet missed much while he was at school and knows little about how your kingdom has been run these past years. If he understood the situation he would be thanking God for his father’s timely heart attack. Perhaps, you can explain to him how things have stood in Denmark before he makes a fatal error.
As for me, I hear that the Romans are coming to Britain and fear for this sceptred isle. I intend to do my part to save my home and only hope that in doing so I will be re-united with Posthumus. If you do not hear from me again know that you remain my dearest friend.
Yours,
Imogen

About Cindy Procter-King

cindy-procter-king-pic

Cindy Procter-King writes sassy suspense, rollicking romantic comedy, and heart-tugging small-town romance. To sum it up, feel-good fiction! A Romance Writers of America® Golden Heart finalist, Cindy’s mission in life is to see her surname spelled properly—with an E. That’s P-r-o-c-t-E-r. Never, under any circumstances, should you spell it with two O’s (shudder).

Cindy’s novels and short fiction are available as eBooks from retailers all over the world, as well as in trade paperback, library hardcover and large print, some foreign editions, and audiobooks.

Cindy lives in beautiful British Columbia with her family, a cat obsessed with dripping tap water, and Allie McBeagle.

About Vigilante Mine

Genre: Paranormal Romance, Superhero Romance

Internal Affairs be damned, Detective Amanda Werner's ditching protocol to hunt the vigilante whose bullet landed her on the bench. But this is no vendetta. Evidence suggests he's the zealot offing corrupt public officials--the same zealot who's promised to set the city ablaze by week's end--and she'll risk her career and her life to save her hometown. Too bad she can't find anything stronger than Kevlar to guard her heart against her primary suspect: a masked man with a telepathic German shepherd, unstable supernatural hearing, and lips that invite a whole different brand of investigation.

All businessman Ryan McLelas, a.k.a. Klepto, wants is redemption. But even if Amanda could forgive his itchy trigger finger, Ryan still has to convince her that his alter ego's no serial killer. No small task, with syndicate-paid police officers turning up among the dead. He'd better keep his own syndicate ties close to his chest and Amanda even closer, because if Klepto is unmasked while he's hunting the real killer, their passionate affair could mark Amanda as the next dirty cop on the hit list.

About Cera Daniels

Cera Daniels PicCera Daniels writes paranormal, science fiction, and steampunk romance. Sexy superheroes. Delicious shifters. Infernal machines. Sometimes behind the same cover. Her heroes are broken and often on the wrong side of good, their worlds are crumbling, but the love her characters find in all that chaos stands on an unshakable foundation.

She hails from South Carolina with her own superhero husband, daughter, and three cats who don't think they're cats at all. Life is especially good in her world when there's Game of Thrones, Shadowrun and board games, chocolate coffee, and an overabundance of yarn on tap.
